Another one gets swallowed into a big brand!
More big brands are buying up local businesses. Wyndham have just acquired Blue Chip Holidays. Not quite so local, with properties around the UK this is one of more to come no doubt. Good for the little guys as some owners jump ship!

By the way, a holiday rental business is a “marketing business that does cleaning”.

A new perspective on cost efficiencies opens up when looked at in this way. Of course there is no going back but it begs the question why holiday home owners, whose customers are Australians by a large majority, are being "taxed" by Google and the OTA gate-keepers who are all US corporations. Of course, there must be some price to pay for listing, but I would agree with you that the price is very high.
This on top of other rising costs. I just received an insurance renewal notice for a modest 4 bedroom home in Cairns that is used as a holiday home. A gob-smacking $6100 and up from last year's $4800. Just 8 years ago, it was less than $700!
How long can this keep up? The insurance companies could be accused of gouging but I fear it is more complicated than that. The US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank have been keeping interest rates at near zero for several years which makes the earning power of insurer's premium income woeful. Shareholders come higher on the pecking order than those, that is us, who actually provide the premium income so we are being savaged just like pensioners who also rely on fixed income.
The world has gone crazy.
